Broadway, Walsall is known for large grand detached houses, and each dwelling has its own nuance. We were commissioned to completely refurbish this large two storey 4 bed property, to create an open plan living arrangement and to convert the loft into additional bedrooms.

The original dwelling, had a Dutch-gable bay window to one side only, the other side was a single storey garage. Our concept was to create a delicately designed front elevation that mirrored the Dutch-gable and created a centre focal point as an entrance. The proposal would create a balanced façade that adds the old with the new.

The proposed scale and massing reflects the character and appearance of the area, something that Walsall Council were not keen to approve, subsequentially the application was refused and we successfully had the decision overturned by an appeal.

The Independent Planning Inspectorate was supportive of the scale, design and massing and stated ‘The proposal would involve the development of three slim gables to the front of the dwelling. I find that these gables would provide for an attractive sense of symmetry across the appeal property’s front façade, as well as for visual interest within the wider area’.

 Planning permission was granted in December 2023. The project services involved the following services:
